Open letter from Ece Güner, arrested in the Ahbap Association investigation: 'I am innocent, I am a victim'

Lawyer Ece Güner, who was arrested as part of the Ahbap Association investigation, sent an open letter to the public from prison. In her letter, Güner defended her innocence against the accusations made against her and stated that she would submit a detailed petition of objection to the court along with her documents.

In her letter, Güner stated, “I am innocent, I am a victim. God knows I am innocent, I know it, and many others know and say it. All the documents also scream my innocence and my victimization.”

Evaluating the investigation file, Güner stated that “after the understandable chaos of the first few days, the dust has now settled,” and said that the testimonies support her own claims. Güner argued that she had no connection with Ahbap “other than being a donor like tens of thousands of people.”

In her letter, Güner claimed that she only gave a personal loan to Haluk Levent upon his request, and that she collected her debt during this process to a large extent and at a loss. Stating that “the matter consists of this,” Güner expressed that the act of lending money cannot be considered a crime.

“If it is a crime to lend money to a person and, moreover, to get it back without interest, then tens of thousands of citizens should be in prison,” said Güner, noting that there is no such crime in the Turkish Penal Code.

Arguing that she is also a victim in the process, Güner concluded her letter with the words, “I still believe with all my heart in the law, justice, and the conscience of humanity, and I pray for law, justice, and conscience.”
