Prison sentence for Barış Pehlivan
Journalist Barış Pehlivan shared the prison sentence he received as a result of a lawsuit filed against him and the details of the process with the public.
Our newspaper's columnist Barış Pehlivan was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison as a result of the trial he faced.
Announcing the verdict on his social media account, Pehlivan included the following words in his post:
'TODAY I WAS SENTENCED TO 1 YEAR AND 3 MONTHS IN PRISON.'
"I want to share the reason:
There is a prosecutor working at the Kilis Courthouse.
Before becoming a prosecutor, he was the head of the AKP's Şehitkamil district branch. While he was the district head of the AKP, he shot and wounded a man he argued with in traffic. Furthermore, he was a member until March 31, 2016, of the Defense, Democracy and Law Association, which was revealed to have placed FETÖ's judge and prosecutor candidates into the judiciary and was closed by a statutory decree (KHK) on July 15.
I called this prosecutor, introduced myself, and stated that I would be reporting on him. Along with this, out of respect for his right to reply, I conveyed my questions to him. He answered them openly. I published all this information and the answers to my questions in the Cumhuriyet newspaper.
A verdict was reached today in this case, which took place among 'friends'. In the end, I was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison for the crime of 'violating the confidentiality of communication.'
'I DO NOT KNOW HOW I COMMITTED THIS CRIME'
I do not know how I committed this crime. I also know that in today's judicial system, this legitimate question of mine has no meaning.
I almost forgot…
The judge, who is a friend of the prosecutor, also imposed bans on some of my rights: the right to vote, to be elected, etc. The most ironic part is that in a country where such a profile is a prosecutor, he also banned me from working in public service.
So it goes… This too shall pass.''
Today I was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison.
