Probation offices overflow following Judicial Package passed in Parliament

With the legislative amendment accepted in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, known as the "11th Judicial Package," significant new facilitations were introduced in the execution process for crimes committed before a certain date. With this new regulation, the transition periods for inmates in closed prisons to open prisons, and for those in open prisons to probation, were brought forward by three years. As a result of this development, the path to release was opened for approximately 50,000 people.

A dense crowd formed in front of the probation offices where released convicts applied to fulfill their obligations. Images taken in front of the Istanbul Anatolian Probation Office in Kadıköy caught the attention of social media users and became among the most shared content.

WHO WILL NOT BENEFIT FROM THE NEW LAW?

The regulations left some crimes outside the scope. Intentional killing, deaths caused by earthquakes, crimes against sexual immunity, and crimes committed within the scope of terrorism and organized activities were kept outside this package.

It was emphasized that legal proceedings will be initiated immediately for those who commit new crimes or violate their obligations during the probation or leave process. It was stated that individuals in this situation will lose their rights in the open penal institution and will be sent back to closed prison.

With the implementation of the regulation, the intensity observed in probation offices across Turkey is expected to last for a few days.
