Seçil Erzan back in court

A new process is beginning in the case of Seçil Erzan, who is being tried in the fraud file known to the public as the "high-yield secret fund." The Istanbul 41st High Criminal Court announced that the first hearing will take place on September 11, following its review of the appellate court's reversal decision. The court also decided that Seçil Erzan will continue to be held in custody during the trial.

In its decision announced on April 17, the Appellate Court overturned the prison sentences handed down to Seçil Erzan and some other defendants on the grounds of procedural deficiencies and returned the file to the local court. A portion of the file was approved as being in accordance with the law. Additionally, it was learned that in the retrial, actions against some complainants were evaluated within the scope of mediation, and the relevant files were sent to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Mediation Bureau. With the trial set to begin on September 11, the proceedings and allegations in the file will be scrutinized once again.

BACKGROUND OF THE CASE

According to the allegations, Seçil Erzan defrauded more than 30 people, including well-known football players, of millions of liras under the guise of a "high-yield reliable fund." Erzan had claimed that prominent figures such as Fatih Terim were also involved in this system. In the trial, where figures from the football world such as Arda Turan, Fernando Muslera, Emre Belözoğlu, and Selçuk İnan were among the complainants, Erzan was sentenced to 102 years and 4 months in prison and a judicial fine of 753 thousand 880 liras.

The 22nd Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice reviewed the prison sentences handed down by the court of first instance for the crimes of "qualified fraud" and "forgery of private documents" due to procedural deficiencies. The review emphasized that the decision regarding other consolidated case files was not sufficiently detailed, which hindered judicial oversight. Consequently, it was decided to overturn some of the convictions and re-examine the file.

In the new trial process, the case will continue for those other than the complainants to whom the mediation procedure will be applied. All eyes will be on the defenses of Seçil Erzan and the other suspects at the first hearing on September 11.
