Taliban continues executions

In the city of Khost in eastern Afghanistan, the Taliban administration carried out an execution in front of thousands of people. The person executed was accused of killing 13 members of the same family. The Taliban Supreme Court stated that this was the 11th public execution since they came to power in 2021.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan Richard Bennett, in a statement made before the execution, emphasized that such practices must be stopped, saying, "Public executions are inhumane and violate international law."

After seizing power, the Taliban implemented a strict interpretation of Sharia law. Within this scope, practices such as public executions, floggings, and restrictions on women's participation in education and professional life were reinstated.

The Taliban Supreme Court announced that the execution order was approved by the lower court, the appellate court, and the Supreme Court, and that the final decision was signed by the Taliban's supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada. Khost police spokesperson Mustaghfir Gurbaz stated that the execution was carried out by a relative of the victim's family. The suspect had been found guilty of killing 13 people, including nine children and their mother. The court reported that it had granted the victims' relatives the right to forgive or reconcile, but the family demanded the death penalty.

The Taliban was also known for similar practices during its first period of rule in the 1990s.
