The figure at the center of controversy becomes Constitutional Court Deputy President

Constitutional Court Deputy President Hasan Tahsin Gökcan's term is set to expire on March 23, 2026, which led to the holding of an election for the deputy presidency at the court.

In the election held during the court's General Assembly meeting, members Selahattin Menteş and İrfan Fidan were candidates.

As a result of the vote, İrfan Fidan was elected as the Deputy President of the Constitutional Court.

WHO IS İRFAN FİDAN?

After graduating from Ankara University Faculty of Law, İrfan Fidan began his career as a judicial judge candidate in Ankara.

Throughout his professional life, he served as a public prosecutor in Kayseri Akkışla, Erzurum Aşkale, Zonguldak Çaycuma, Hatay Dörtyol, Istanbul Şişli, and Istanbul.

In 2012, Fidan was appointed as an authorized public prosecutor under Article 10 of the Anti-Terror Law, and he served as Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor of Istanbul between January 16, 2015, and July 26, 2016. He subsequently served as the Chief Public Prosecutor of Istanbul until November 27, 2020. On the same date, he was elected as a member of the Court of Cassation.

HE WAS APPOINTED TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT TWO MONTHS LATER

Approximately two months after his election as a member of the Court of Cassation, Fidan was appointed as a member of the Constitutional Court by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on January 23, 2021.
