Timur Soykan speaks for the first time after detention: 'They are doing this to make us stay silent'

BirGün columnist and journalist Timur Soykan was detained due to a social media post criticizing operations against CHP-run municipalities. Brought before a judge, Soykan was released under judicial control.

Following the detention process, Soykan made statements on Onlar TV, which broadcasts on YouTube, and shared his experiences and thoughts on the judicial system in Turkey with the public.

“NONE OF THOSE IN PRISON ARE CRIMINALS; THEY ARE PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE”

Timur Soykan began his speech by recalling the journalists and politicians held in prison. Emphasizing that many names, primarily Fatih Altaylı and Furkan Karabay, have been unjustly arrested, Soykan said:

“People continue to languish in prison for simply expressing their opinions, reporting news, and based on nonsensical allegations without any legal justification, simply because their intentions are being read.

Tayfun Kahraman, Mine Özerden, Çiğdem Mater, mayors, politicians… Among them are those facing up to 89 years in prison.”

“THE JUDICIARY IN TURKEY IS NOW DEVOID OF REASON AND LOGIC”

Evaluating the detention process he experienced, Soykan stated that it was an “example of lawlessness” for him. He noted that the judiciary in Turkey has reached a point that can no longer be explained by logic.

“THEY ARE DOING THIS SO WE DO NOT SPEAK, SO WE STAY SILENT”

Stating that journalism and freedom of expression are being deliberately targeted, Soykan evaluated the process as follows:

“Everyone asks why they are doing this. They are doing it for this reason: so that we do not express our thoughts, so that we do not practice journalism, so that we do not convey the truth to the public, so that people are afraid to speak... But we will keep our heads held high. We will walk the path we know to be right until the end.”
