TİP announces: Niğde Provincial Organization member Elif Önder arrested over anti-NATO post

The Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) has announced that Elif Önder, a member of its Niğde Provincial Organization, has been arrested on the grounds of an anti-NATO social media post.

In a statement released on the party's social media account, it was stated that Önder was detained at her home and that the Niğde Criminal Court of Peace ordered her arrest on charges of "threatening to create fear and panic among the public."

In its statement, TİP quoted the post cited as the reason for the arrest as follows: "We will not allow NATO and its blood-stained representatives to walk around our country freely. We do not want the NATO Summit that is planned to be held in Ankara this summer, nor do we want NATO. We will grow the struggle against imperialism, war, and occupation."

The statement argued that the government is trying to suppress reactions to the NATO Summit. TİP stated, "Opposing NATO is not a crime; not wanting Trump and his likes to come to our country is the most natural right of citizenship."

The party called for the release of Elif Önder and those arrested in connection with the NATO Summit, and demanded an end to practices targeting citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
