Turkey ranks 9th in the world in prison population per 100,000 people

According to a chart shared on X, 503 out of every 100,000 people in Turkey are in prison; the country has the highest rate in Europe on the list.

Turkey ranks 9th in the world in prison population per 100,000 people

Economist İnan Mutlu stated in a post shared on X that Turkey ranks 9th in the world in terms of prison population per 100,000 people.  

According to the chart included in the post, 503 out of every 100,000 people in Turkey are in prison. It was noted that with this rate, Turkey is by far in the first place in Europe, and among G20 countries, the only country with a higher rate than Turkey is the USA.

In the chart, El Salvador took the first place with a prison population rate of 1,659 per 100,000 people. El Salvador was followed by Cuba, Turkmenistan, and the United States. Turkey was shown in 9th place on the list with a rate of 503.

While the US rate was given as 542 in the ranking, Rwanda was placed just below Turkey with 489. The post drew attention on social media regarding prison population rates and Turkey's position on the international list.
