Video of him wearing a headscarf had gone viral: Murat Övüç released

An investigation was launched by the Küçükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against influencer Murat Övüç after a video of him wearing a headscarf, which had been filmed in the past, began circulating on social media again, on charges of "publicly inciting hatred and hostility." Övüç, who was arrested following the investigation, appeared before the judge for the second time at the Küçükçekmece 5th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Murat Övüç attended the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS), and his lawyer was also present in the courtroom. The court panel stated that there were no elements of incitement in the current file and that they were waiting for the examination of previous case files, emphasizing that some documents were missing.

Given the floor, Murat Övüç stated, "I reiterate my previous defenses. I request my release and acquittal." The public prosecutor requested his release under judicial control, taking into account the need to address the deficiencies in the case file, the time the defendant had spent in custody, and the status of the evidence.

RELEASED UNDER JUDICIAL CONTROL

In its interim decision, the court ruled to end Murat Övüç's detention, imposing judicial control measures of "signing in" and a "travel ban." It was decided that the trial would continue at a later date to allow for the completion of the missing documents.

With this development, Övüç will follow the remainder of the process from outside, subject to judicial control measures, in the headscarf video case that sparked widespread public reaction.
