Aggravated life sentence requested for author Funda Demirci, who killed her ex-husband in Beşiktaş

In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the victim's children Ece and Mete Çapar were listed as "victims," while the victim's brothers Hasan and Niyazi Çapar were listed as "complainants."

The indictment states that on September 28, 2023, a report was received by the Etiler Police Station that victim Mustafa Çapar had been killed by his ex-wife, who stabbed him in the throat at his residence on Selçuklar Street in the Akat neighborhood of Beşiktaş, and that an investigation was subsequently launched.

The indictment includes the statement of the victim and defendant's son, Mete Çapar, who provided information that his mother, Funda Demirci, and his father had divorced in 2021, but that his mother would come to stay at their home from time to time.

It was stated that Çapar, describing how his mother came to the house on the day of the incident, said he entered the living room after hearing a noise at night, saw his father on the floor covered in blood, and later saw security guards arrive and apply pressure to his father's throat.

The indictment also includes the testimony of Tayfur Vurgen, a private security guard at the site, who stated that when he went to the front of the house on the night of the incident, he saw the defendant Demirci leaving the building with a large knife in her hand. Upon entering the house, he found the victim with his throat slit and covered in blood, with his son sitting at the victim's feet crying.

It was stated that when the ambulance arrived, witness Vurgen left the scene to another security guard colleague and saw the defendant making a phone call, saying, "Arrange a plane ticket for me."

She had sent voice recordings expressing her hatred for her husband

The indictment noted that while the investigation was ongoing, the defendant exercised her right to remain silent, and it was determined that before the murder, she had sent emails and voice recordings to her brother, Murat Demirci, expressing her hatred for her ex-husband, and that she had been receiving therapy.

The indictment stated that a report from the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) was requested to determine whether Funda Demirci was of sound mind, and emphasized that the defendant's exercise of her right to remain silent and her sending of hate-filled voice recordings to her brother did not indicate that Demirci had a mental illness at a level that would affect her criminal liability.

The indictment referred to the ATK report on victim Mustafa Çapar dated November 27, 2023, noting that it was determined his death occurred as a result of external bleeding caused by a thyroid cartilage incision and major vessel injury due to a sharp, penetrating instrument.

The indictment requested that defendant Funda Demirci be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing of an ex-spouse."

The trial of defendant Demirci, under the indictment accepted by the High Criminal Court, will begin in the coming days.
