Özer fell ill on July 5 while at her summer home in Balıkesir with her family and neighbors. After being taken to Edremit State Hospital, it was determined that she had suffered a stroke, and she remained in intensive care for 12 days.

At the request of her family and with the permission of her doctors, Özer was brought to Istanbul and admitted to the intensive care unit at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital.

Hayriye Özer's daughter, Çiğdem Özer, announced that her mother's treatment in the intensive care unit is ongoing.

Expressing her gratitude for the close attention of the doctors, Özer said, "We are waiting for our mother, a symbol of kindness who carries the beauty of her father Aşık Veysel's heart and possesses vast love and tolerance, to recover and return to us. We are praying for our mother, who has been cherished by everyone from young to old and who embraced everyone without distinction."

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül visited Hayriye Özer, the daughter of Aşık Veysel Şatıroğlu, one of the last great representatives of the minstrel tradition, at the hospital where she is being treated, received information about her health status, and conveyed his best wishes to the family.
