Assoc. Prof. Dr. Savaş Özsu on the causes and treatment methods for persistent dry cough
Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Savaş Özsu explained in detail the various causes and diagnostic methods for persistent dry cough. He emphasized that factors such as respiratory tract infections, allergies, asthma, and reflux trigger coughing.
Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Savaş Özsu discussed in depth the health effects and potential causes of persistent dry cough. A cough is a reflex symptom that occurs due to abnormalities in the throat and upper respiratory tract. Acute or chronic cough can significantly affect patients' quality of life.
While a cough that lasts for 3 weeks usually indicates an acute illness, coughs lasting longer than 8 weeks are considered chronic. In such cases, the most common causes include chronic upper airway diseases, asthma, reflux, smoking, and environmental factors.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özsu stated, "Respiratory tract infections, especially viral and bacterial infections, are among the most common causes of acute cough. However, in cases of long-term cough, underlying diseases such as asthma must be investigated."
POSSIBLE CAUSES
- Allergic Reactions: Allergens such as dust, pollen, and animal dander can cause irritation in the throat and trigger a dry cough.
- Asthma: Chronic inflammation in the airways can lead to a dry cough along with shortness of breath and wheezing.
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): The backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus can cause mucosal irritation and coughing.
- Smoking: Cigarette smoke can cause irritation in the respiratory tract, leading to a chronic cough.
- Dry and Cold Air: Low humidity levels can cause the throat to dry out and worsen the cough.
DIAGNOSTIC METHODS
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özsu said, "A detailed evaluation is essential to determine the cause of a persistent dry cough. Medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests are of great importance. Advanced examinations such as chest X-rays, spirometry, and allergy skin tests can help identify underlying pathologies."
TREATMENT METHODS
Treatment should be directed at the underlying cause. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özsu noted, "Treatment for upper respiratory tract infections is generally effective. Antihistamines are recommended for allergic cough, bronchodilators for asthma treatment, and acid-reducing medications for GERD treatment. Quitting smoking and avoiding environmental air pollution are also important."
Additionally, using a humidifier at home and consuming herbal teas that soothe the throat can help alleviate symptoms. It was emphasized that patients experiencing such symptoms should consult a healthcare professional.
