Bad news for influencers: Flash announcement from the Ministry of Trade!
According to the Ministry of Trade's 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, it has been decided to launch an 'Influencer Certification Program' project to protect consumers.
With an approach focused on protecting digital consumers, efforts have begun to combat deceptive and misleading practices, particularly regarding advertisements on digital platforms. Influencers, who significantly influence online shopping preferences, will also be subject to oversight. It has been decided to implement an 'Influencer Certification Program Project' in cooperation with the Advertising Self-Regulatory Board and the Advertising Board.
In this context, legislation regarding consumer protection will be reviewed in accordance with current developments. To increase the effectiveness of market surveillance and inspection activities, the existing institutional structure and legislation will be examined, and institutions will be ensured to work in coordination while their capacities are increased.
By providing assurance to advertisers through the Ministry of Trade, the goal is for certified influencers to act responsibly. Similar to the 'Trust Stamp' model applied in e-commerce, where it is conveyed how citizens can trust e-commerce platforms that display the trust stamp, the perception that certified influencers can be trusted will be reinforced here.
Consumer arbitration committees will be restructured to be present in all 81 provincial centers, and their institutional and human capacities will be developed.
INNOVATION IN THE CONSUMER INFORMATION SYSTEM
For disputes under 104 thousand TL in 2024, it is mandatory to apply to district or provincial consumer arbitration committees. Additionally, a Consumer Complaint Platform will be established to resolve consumer disputes electronically. Practices in foreign countries regarding consumer protection will be examined, and a needs analysis will be conducted to strengthen the existing institutional structure. Similarly, innovation and improvement efforts will be carried out in the Consumer Information System.
Special measures will be taken for vulnerable consumer groups, primarily children and the elderly. Promotional and awareness-raising activities will be conducted to educate producers and consumers, with a focus on green transformation, the environmental impact of products, and sustainable production and consumption.
