'Jellyfish' obstacle for Bengisu Avcı

Ultra-marathon swimmer Bengisu Avcı was unable to complete the Molokai Channel in Hawaii, the fifth leg of her "Oceans Seven" goal, due to jellyfish stings.

In a statement released by the Bengisu Avcı Communication Office, it was noted that Avcı was forced to board the boat during the final hours of the 45-kilometer course due to contact with Man o' War jellyfish.

HEALTH STATUS IS GOOD

It was reported that Avcı, who had switched to swimming on her back with approximately 1-2 hours remaining in the course, stopped swimming after the final and most severe contact. It was stated that Avcı, who received treatment, is in good health.

It was noted that Bengisu Avcı plans to cross the North Channel at the end of this year and the Tsugaru Strait at the beginning of 2025, and that a new date for the Molokai course will be determined later.

'A SITUATION INHERENT TO THE SPORT'

In the statement, which included her remarks, Bengisu Avcı thanked everyone who supported her, stating, "Ocean waters are not our habitat, but the living space of marine creatures. A situation inherent to the nature of this sport occurred. I will continue the struggle, and the jellyfish will surely allow me to pass."
