Mussels in the Bosphorus under threat from microplastics!
According to research conducted by Istanbul Aydın University, microplastics were found in 73% of mussels collected from the Bosphorus. This indicates that marine pollution is entering the food chain through mussels and threatening human health.
Microplastics have been detected in mussels in the Bosphorus, prompting a warning. According to a study conducted at Istanbul Aydın University, microplastics were found in 73% of 30 different mussel samples taken from the Sarıyer region. Experts drew attention to environmental pollution and warned citizens about the harmful effects of microplastics.
According to the research conducted at Istanbul Aydın University, microplastics were detected in 73% of 30 different mussel samples taken from the Sarıyer region of the Bosphorus.
According to a report by DW Türkçe, Dr. Ayla Ünver Alçay, Faculty Member and Deputy Director of the Food Application and Research Center at Istanbul Aydın University, pointed out that microplastics were also found in another study conducted on stuffed mussels in 2020.
"THEY SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT BE CONSUMED"
Pointing out that with the increase in marine pollution, mussels obtained from this region may contain high amounts of microplastics, Alçay said, "One should definitely not consume mussels whose production site is unknown, whose expiration date is unknown, and which are sold under unsuitable conditions, and of course, precautions must be taken against this."
Stating that polyamide-type microplastics were most frequently encountered within the scope of the study, Alçay said that these plastics could cause harmful effects on health.
Alçay advised consumers not to consume mussels sold on the street on trays or kept for long periods in glass display cases. She also emphasized that they should ask about the origin of the mussels and pay attention to whether they are presented in a clean, hygienic environment.
