British woman receives title of 'world's oldest person'

Born on August 21, 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Ethel Caterham is considered the longest-living person in England. Caterham received this title following the passing of Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas at the age of 116.

When asked about the secret to her long life, Caterham responded with the words, “I don't argue with anyone. I listen and do what I want.”

Caterham, who went to British India at a young age to work for a military family, married Lieutenant Colonel Norman Caterham in 1933. The couple married at Salisbury Cathedral and lived in various places such as Gibraltar and Hong Kong due to his duties. During this time, Ethel Caterham founded a nursery in Hong Kong.

Caterham had two daughters with her husband, with whom she remained until his death in 1976. Having spent the last 50 years in Surrey, Caterham has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Caterham, who is the first British person to hold the title of "world's oldest person" since Anna Williams, who died in 1987 at the age of 114, is not the only person in England to hold such a title. John Tinniswood, who died last year at the age of 112, was recorded as the oldest man in the world.
