It was announced that the actor, producer, and publicist Cottrell died at the age of 79 at a care facility in Woodland Hills, California, due to Parkinson's disease.

The actor's sister, Suzy Cottrell-Smith, stated in her announcement: "My lovely, funny, critical, gourmet, special, intelligent, loving brother passed on to the next life in the early hours of New Year's Day. He was smiling when he died. Mickey Cottrell will be missed by many."
