David Lynch had supported Gezi: Here is the story behind that photo!

American director David Lynch has passed away at the age of 78. David Lynch, who created many unforgettable films, had supported the Gezi Park protests.

Kerem Biçmen, who took the photo at an event in the US, described the incident in Radikal newspaper with these sentences:

“I found out by chance that David Lynch would be meeting with his fans in Los Angeles to promote his new album.

I took out the parchment with #direngezi written on it from the Gezi kit I always carry in my pocket and set off. When I met the American actress Rose McGowan, whom I am a fan of, in June, she had asked me questions about Gezi as soon as she heard I was from Turkey. I was very surprised that she knew so much, and just as happy. I was sad that I hadn't received such a slogan-based support from Rose at that time. I didn't have any printouts with me, and of course, I couldn't find one at that moment.

“Are you aware of the Gezi protests?” I asked, “Of course,” he said

I was sure I would get his support when I went to Lynch. During the event, I went up to him with the paper in my hand. I started by asking, “Are you aware of the Gezi protests in Istanbul?” He said, “Of course,” and even looked at me as if to say, “Are you kidding me?”

“He said he was proud of us”

Then I explained what the writing in my hand meant and why it was important. Lynch stated that he had been following the events since the first day and said that he was proud of us and our struggle.

It was an event where taking photos was normally forbidden, but he said it wouldn't be a problem. So I took his photo and shared it on my Facebook account. The photo became very popular afterward.”
