Feline veterinary surgeon Dr. Jo Lewis told Sky News earlier this year that the virus is spreading rapidly, especially in places where cats live in close proximity, such as animal shelters.
According to Lewis, the virus "can also be transmitted via cat combs, litter scoops, and even people's feet and hands. This theory also explains why only domestic cats were affected by the outbreak in Cyprus."
SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT
Feline Medicine Specialist Professor Danielle Gunn-Moore says this new strain, called F-CoV-23, is 'particularly virulent' and 'enters all cells' instead of staying in one place.
Warning cat owners about what to look out for, Professor Gunn-Moore notes that common symptoms include a swollen abdomen, potential breathing problems, and loss of appetite. On the other hand, neurological symptoms such as wobbling and seizures should also be monitored.
According to Professor Gunn-Moore, cats diagnosed with FIP can be treated with two Covid-19 antivirals that are 'effective in treating the disease' and have been seen to 'work well' on the new strain.
