Deniz Akkaya in court: Facing trial with a demand for imprisonment

Former model Deniz Akkaya has begun standing trial on charges of threatening and insulting a judge overseeing her daughter's custody case via social media, with prosecutors seeking up to 5 years and 11 months in prison. Deniz Akkaya, who is being tried without arrest, attended the hearing at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance along with her lawyers.

'I EXPERIENCED SOMETHING THAT MADE ME VERY ANGRY'

In her defense during the hearing, Deniz Akkaya emphasized that she had never had any legal issues with any judge or prosecutor before, stating, "For the first time in my life, I am facing such a situation. It was clear that the incident was malicious, and I discovered that my accounts had been blocked just as I was about to go to Greece to buy a house. Despite being a victim, I could not reach the judge. I am questioning why I am being subjected to such injustice when I have rights granted to me by law. My assets and bank accounts were frozen by the judge, which left me unable to even meet my basic needs. I expressed the grievance I experienced on social media. I faced serious difficulties regarding both my family and my health. My posts were entirely filled with sadness, anger, and reproach. I said these things because I felt a great injustice had been done to me."

HOUSE ARREST JUDICIAL CONTROL LIFTED

In its interim decision, the court lifted the "house arrest" judicial control measure imposed on the defendant Deniz Akkaya. However, the court ruled that the travel ban would remain in effect and adjourned the hearing to address outstanding matters.

The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requests that the suspect, Deniz Akkaya, be sentenced to a total of 1 year, 5 months, and 15 days up to 5 years and 11 months in prison for allegedly committing the crimes of public insult and threat against a public official due to their duty in a chain-like manner.
