Deniz Akkaya sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison

Akkaya was sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison, along with 5 other individuals, on charges of having her former manager Merih Yılmaz assaulted and seizing his vehicle. The Istanbul High Criminal Court handed down the verdict for the crimes of "Robbery in a Residence" and "Deprivation of Liberty."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The incident took place on October 3, 2018. Merih Yılmaz, who was managing Deniz Akkaya, had found a loan of 20 thousand Euros at Akkaya's request on September 28 and delivered it to her lawyer, Merih Erkul. However, on October 3, Deniz Akkaya summoned Yılmaz to a meeting at her lawyer's office in Beyoğlu.

According to the allegations, when Yılmaz arrived at the office, he was assaulted by 5 people accompanying Akkaya and was forced to transfer his vehicle in exchange for his debt. A power of attorney was obtained for the vehicle, which was registered in Yılmaz's mother's name, and Yılmaz was made to sign a document stating that he had no debt to Akkaya.

PROSECUTOR'S INVESTIGATION AND TRIAL PROCESS

Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

An indictment was prepared against Deniz Akkaya and the 5 people accompanying her on charges of "Robbery for the Purpose of Collecting a Legal Debt" and "Deprivation of Liberty by Using Force, Threat, or Deception."

In the trial held at the Istanbul High Criminal Court, the complainant Merih Yılmaz and the defendants Deniz Akkaya, Oğuzhan M., Erdi T., Mehmet D., Uğur K., Yahya Y., along with their lawyers, were present. The defendants denied the accusations, arguing that the transfer of the vehicle took place with Yılmaz's consent and that there was no physical intervention or coercion.

PROSECUTOR'S OPINION AND COURT VERDICT

In his final opinion, the prosecutor stated that Deniz Akkaya could not document her claim of debt and that the complainant denied these claims. It was stated that the defendants assaulted the complainant, did not allow him to leave the office, and seized his vehicle and phone. Stating that the defendants acted with the intent of participation, the prosecutor requested that each be sentenced to 15 years in prison.

According to the report by Sabah, the court announced its verdict after the defenses, sentencing Deniz Akkaya and the other 5 defendants to a total of 13 years and 4 months in prison for the crimes of "Robbery in a Residence" and "Deprivation of Liberty."
