Design secrets that make Japanese homes look spacious
The Japanese use various design strategies to make small living spaces appear larger and brighter. Minimalism and natural materials are at the forefront of these strategies.
In Japan, people living in homes with limited space have developed various methods to make their homes appear larger and more spacious. At the forefront of these methods is adopting a minimalist approach.
By avoiding unnecessary items, only the furniture and objects that are needed are used. This allows living spaces to achieve a more spacious and organized appearance.

The Japanese generally prefer light tones for walls, floors, and furniture. Colors such as white, cream, and light gray reflect light, making rooms appear brighter and more spacious. Furthermore, they allow natural light to enter by using large windows and translucent sliding panels called shoji.
To make small spaces more functional, the Japanese use furniture such as foldable beds (futons), floor cushions (zabutons), and multi-purpose tables and cabinets. This furniture can be removed when necessary to open up space.
The use of natural materials in Japanese homes is also noteworthy. Materials such as bamboo, wood, and stone provide both simplicity and a peaceful atmosphere. Floor coverings made from natural reeds, called tatami, create clear boundaries and order in the room, which helps the space be perceived as more organized and spacious.
