Eddie Murphy announces: 'Shrek 5' is coming
Eddie Murphy has shared exciting news for fans of the beloved Shrek franchise. Murphy stated that production on the new Shrek film has begun.
"Shrek" fans were first told that work on the fifth film in the series had begun in April 2023 by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri. Now, a new update on the highly anticipated film has come from Eddie Murphy, who voices the character Donkey.
Speaking with Collider to promote the Netflix film "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F", Murphy said he has begun recording for "Shrek 5" and confirmed that a "Donkey" spin-off film will follow. Murphy stated:
"We started doing Shrek 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie]."
When asked if he was recording for both projects simultaneously, the actor noted that he is currently only recording for "Shrek 5" and mentioned he expects the film to be released in 2025. According to Murphy, the "Donkey" film will follow the next year, in 2026.
Mike Myers is expected to return as Shrek and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona for "Shrek 5". Murphy has been voicing Donkey since the original Oscar-winning film in 2001. The first two "Shrek" films, in particular, were critically acclaimed, and the franchise has grossed over 4 billion dollars to date on a budget of 755 million dollars.
