Endangered green sea turtle found dead on shore
A green sea turtle has washed ashore in the Manavgat district of Antalya. It was determined that the turtle, which is noted as a rare species on the Manavgat coast, died after becoming entangled in a fishing net and sustaining a neck injury.
In the Manavgat district, teams from the Sea Turtles, Mediterranean Monk Seals, and Sand Lilies Coastal Protection Association (DEKAFOK) have been continuing their conservation efforts along the Sorgun-Side coast, which is one of the most significant nesting areas for sea turtles, a species under threat of extinction and vital to the marine ecosystem.
During these efforts, a dead green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) was found washed ashore a few days ago.
It was determined that the green sea turtle, a rare sight on the Manavgat coast, had sustained a neck injury and died due to gillnets set by fishermen in the Boğaz area.
'THEY MIGRATE TO THE OPEN SEA'
Akdeniz University Faculty of Fisheries lecturer and DEKAFOK advisor Prof. Dr. Cengiz Deval stated, "After hatching, juvenile green sea turtles migrate to the open sea as quickly as possible. During their pelagic life stage, they remain in surface waters for 3-6 years until they reach a length of 20-30 centimeters. Juveniles migrate to productive coastal habitats like Manavgat to spend their sub-adult stages, remaining there for 5-8 years."
