Everywhere is a crime scene! 3-month report on femicides released

According to the three-month report published by the Socio-Political Field Research Center, at least 117 women were murdered across Turkey between July and September 2024.

Everywhere is a crime scene! 3-month report on femicides released

Data for the three-month report, which covers cases of violence against women and child abuse between July and September 30, 2024, was compiled from Bianet, Jin News, the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, and various local and national media outlets.

117 WOMEN MURDERED, 110 DEATHS SUSPICIOUS

According to the report, during the period examined, 117 women were murdered, 110 women died under suspicious circumstances, 163 women were subjected to physical violence, 147 women were forced into sex work, 42 women were subjected to sexual harassment, and 3 women were raped. 

When the age ranges of the victims were examined, while the age of the majority was unknown, 8 percent were identified as 0-17, 5 percent as 18-24, 6.1 percent as 25-34, 5.7 percent as 35-44, 3.5 percent as 45-54, 2.5 percent as 55-64, and 3.1 percent as 65 and older.

ALMOST ONE IN EVERY FIVE MURDERS OCCURRED IN ISTANBUL 

As for the perpetrators of violence, 18.2 percent were unknown, 15.6 percent were husbands, 4.4 percent were husbands in the process of divorce, 3.5 percent were ex-husbands, 3.5 percent were boyfriends, and 3.5 percent were relatives. While the highest rate of perpetrators in murders came from husbands at 23.1 percent, 73.8 percent of sexual harassment cases were carried out by unknown persons. All cases of forced sex work were also carried out by unknown persons.

In terms of geographical distribution, 14.5 percent of the murders took place in Istanbul, 7.7 percent in Ankara, and 6.8 percent in Izmir. Regarding sexual harassment, 31 percent occurred in Istanbul, while 33.3 percent of rape cases took place in Muğla.
