Famous director Tarantino's controversial gun statement: 'Firing is what's exciting'

Quentin Tarantino has announced that he is in favor of using real guns on film sets, despite calls to end this practice following the accidental shooting death of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin on the set of the film Rust. Known for his violent films, the director of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction said he prefers to see real firearms and blanks rather than using special effects or computer-generated imagery.

Speaking on a podcast, 61-year-old Tarantino said, "Firing is what's exciting, and seeing the real orange flash, not adding an orange flash to the image. Despite all the guns we've fired in movies, we only have two examples of people being accidentally shot."

CINEMATOGRAPHER DIED ON SET

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died on the set of Rust in 2021, and director Joel Souza was injured. 66-year-old Alec Baldwin's gun discharged while he was practicing a cross-draw in a church on the set of the western film, striking Hutchins and Souza, who was standing behind her. In 1993, actor Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, lost his life when a gun was fired on set during the filming of The Crow.

'THE ACTOR IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACCIDENT'

Tarantino argued that actors like Baldwin are at least partially responsible for the safe handling of firearms on film sets. The director said, "In this situation, I think I'm fair enough to say that the person who hands the gun to them is 90 percent responsible for everything that happens with the gun. But the actor is 10 percent responsible. It's a gun! You are also responsible to a certain degree."

Rust's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter following a trial in April. When filming for Rust resumed a year and a half after Hutchins' death, there were no guns on set.
