Legendary Turkish Classical Music artist Gönül Akkor laid to rest

Gönül Akkor, one of the beloved names of Turkish Classical Music, passed away yesterday. A funeral ceremony was held today at Teşvikiye Mosque for Akkor, who closed her eyes to the world at the age of 82.

The funeral was attended by her sister Kamuran Akkor, Kamuran Akkor's daughter Menekşe Uçaroğlu, Melike Demirağ, singer Bora Gencer, artist Selami Şahin, her relatives, and many figures from the art world.

Emotional moments were experienced at the ceremony. Following the funeral prayer performed after the noon prayer, Akkor was laid to rest at Feriköy Cemetery.

Her sister Kamuran Akkor said, “What can I say, I am very sad. Please excuse me, I cannot talk much. I am very sad. She had an illness. May God have mercy on her.”

"WE WERE NOT EXPECTING THE NEWS OF HER DEATH"

Kamuran Akkor's daughter Menekşe Uçaroğlu stated, “We are very sad, we lost my aunt. Her loved ones are here. She had been ill for a long time. My aunt had a brain hemorrhage 20 years ago. Her health was actually good, but she had hip fracture surgery.

After that, she was under treatment for a while. But now, the struggle with that illness can only go so far. We are very sad. We were not expecting the news of her death. We were expecting her to be discharged. I mean, she did not have such a fatal condition,” she said.

Selami Şahin said, “She sang many songs and made albums. There cannot be a person with such a pure heart. A voice like this will never come to Turkey again.”
