This mirror reconciles feuding couples: Price is 1000 TL

The mirror, known as the "spat mirror" and used for centuries between spouses during the Ottoman era, surprises those who hear its story.

According to tradition, when one of the spouses is upset with their partner, they turn the mirror around and it stays that way until the partner makes amends; once the apology is accepted, it is turned back to its front side.

The mirror, which is one of the most special pieces at the antique festival held in the İzmit district of Kocaeli, attracts attention from couples, especially due to its story.

Merchant Cüneyt Başar, who says he has been dealing in antiques for 30 years, said the following regarding the story of the 'spat mirror':

"We have an antique piece called the 'spat mirror' from the Ottoman era. The inside is made of amber, and the top is silver-plated. In the past, a bride would hang the mirror upside down to show she was upset with her husband. Back then, people wouldn't stay upset for long; the resentment would last at most one day.

The mirror I have is roughly a 100-year-old piece. It was a set of 4 pieces ranging from small to large, and the others have been sold. Generally, antique pieces come from villages. However, since their value is now recognized, no one wants to give up their antiques. As the price of scrap metal has also risen, decorative items are becoming expensive for us as well.

We sell the spat mirror for an average of 1000 TL. I wish everyone would buy one and put it in their home. Spouses wouldn't stay upset with each other; they would immediately understand the resentment and make amends."
