Gen Z follows the news on TikTok
According to a new study, Gen Z uses TikTok to follow the news, even though they do not trust its content. While 40% of those in the 18-24 age group get their news from TikTok, trust in the BBC remains at 19%.
According to a new study, Gen Z prefers TikTok to follow the news, even though they hesitate to trust its news content. This research examined the news consumption habits of young people in the United Kingdom.
For Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, trust in traditional news sources has diminished due to the effects of the digital age. However, it has been determined that young people prefer social media as a news source instead of traditional media.
According to the study, more than 40 percent of young people in the 18-24 age group get their daily news via TikTok. This rate is far above the rate of those who get their news from national broadcasters like the BBC.
According to the research results, platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are preferred by Gen Z more than traditional media organizations.
Lee Cain, co-founder of the communications firm Charlesbye, which conducted the research, stated that Gen Z trusts traditional media less but turns to social media to get news. According to Cain, this situation points to a "post-truth media age" where young people trust content creators more.
In the research conducted through surveys and focus groups, it was revealed that members of Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, trust television news the most. However, more than a third of young people in the 18-24 age group stated that they get their news from social media feeds.
According to the report, older generations still trust traditional media more. While most of those in the 45-54 age group get their news from television and newspapers, the rate of those who see social media as their main news source is quite low.
The research also showed that young people in the 18-24 age group show less interest in current events, but the majority of Britain's general population consumes news daily and older generations are more likely to follow current events.
