Harassment scandal shaking Hollywood: Harvey Weinstein to be retried
Following the overturning of the 23-year prison sentence for Harvey Weinstein, who was tried for sexual assault and harassment, the prosecutor decided to proceed with a retrial, stating that the acts in question were not consensual and adding, "We believe in this case."
After the New York Court of Appeals overturned the 23-year prison sentence handed down to producer Harvey Weinstein—against whom numerous actresses and film industry workers had testified regarding allegations of harassment and sexual assault—the Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced in court on Wednesday that Weinstein will be retried in New York.
More than four years after the conviction of Weinstein, who ignited the 'Me Too' movement in Hollywood and whose case is seen as a turning point for that movement and the global struggle of women, he appeared before Judge Curtis Farber in a wheelchair and a black suit.
'WE BELIEVE IN THIS CASE'
The prosecutor in the case, Nicole Blumberg, stated regarding the allegations against Weinstein, "There was nothing consensual about this behavior. We believe in this case, and we will proceed with a retrial."
According to Weinstein's spokesperson Juda Engelmayer, the 72-year-old producer was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan following last week's decision.
Farber remanded Weinstein back into custody and scheduled a new hearing to take place after the May 1st Labor Day holiday, though he did not set a definitive date.
