He turned his back on people after his goats were stolen, has been living in the mountains for 17 years
Mehmet Çabuk, who lives in Antalya, turned his back on people and began living in the mountains after his 150 goats were stolen 17 years ago. Living alone in a shack he built from wood, Çabuk said, "If it weren't for my goats, I couldn't stay here for even an hour. I eat whatever God provides."
Mehmet Çabuk, who stays in the mountains of the Karadere region in the Ulupınar neighborhood of Antalya's Kemer district, draws attention with his extraordinary lifestyle.
Living in a shack he built from wood, which he covered with a nylon tarp and set up in the valley with his own means, Çabuk never leaves the side of his nearly 100 goats.
Having turned his back on people after nearly 150 of his goats were stolen in a single night in 2007, Çabuk has not left his location for 17 years, except for food shopping twice a week.
HE WALKS 45 MINUTES FOR SHOPPING
Çabuk reaches Ulupınar for his food shopping after a 45-minute walk.
Sleeping with his goats at night, waking up early, lighting a fire, picking flowers, and taking long walks in the valley, Çabuk tells his relatives who come to visit him that he is doing well and that they should not worry.
Bathing in the stream in the valley and communicating with tourists who occasionally pass through the area using sign language because he does not speak a foreign language, Çabuk's health condition is also noteworthy.
HE DOES NOT USE MEDICATION
Explaining that he does not use medication and eats only two meals a day, Çabuk said that he received treatment for blood pressure due to stress and sadness during the time his goats were stolen, but that his blood pressure has now stabilized to the point where he no longer needs medication. Stating that he never gets bored, Çabuk said, "In the mornings, I put my hands in my pockets and take a stroll. I don't get bored; I'm used to it. If it weren't for my goats, I couldn't stay here for even an hour. I eat whatever God provides. This morning for breakfast, I brewed some tea and ate it with olives and bread."
