WHAT HAPPENED TO İZZET GARİH?

Alarko Holding Chairman of the Board İzzet Garih received a death threat in a message sent to his LinkedIn account on January 19. The message sent by Ahmet Furkan B. included the phrase, "I will set the whole world on fire with you." Five days later, Ahmet Furkan B. went to the Alarko Holding headquarters in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, and attempted to drive his vehicle rapidly into the building. Despite efforts by security guards to stop him, he came to a halt after hitting the bollards at the entrance of the building. He then shouted threats, saying, "İzzet Garih will come here. If you don't let me in, I will burn both him and you."

'I AM HIS BROTHER'

Police teams arriving at the scene detained Ahmet Furkan B. In his statement, he claimed that he saw himself as İzzet Garih's brother and that this was the reason for his attempt. The suspect, who was referred to court, stated that he felt no remorse and was released under judicial control. However, he continued to harass Garih after his release. He attempted to exert psychological pressure by constantly visiting his LinkedIn account. İzzet Garih, who can see who views his social media account, experienced great anxiety as the threats continued.

GARİH APPLIED TO THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

In the complaint petition submitted to the prosecutor's office by Garih's lawyer, it was stated, "The client is in great fear due to a tragic event his family experienced in the past. His father, Üzeyir Garih, fell victim to a murder on August 25, 2001, which has still not been fully clarified. The suspect's contradictory statements further increase our client's fear of being killed. We request that the necessary steps be taken to prevent a life-threatening risk and to punish the suspect."

HOW WAS ÜZEYİR GARİH KILLED?

Üzeyir Garih, one of the founders of Alarko Holding, lost his life after being stabbed on August 25, 2001, while visiting the Hüseyin Şeyh Tomb in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul. He had gone to the tomb alone on a day when his driver and bodyguard were on leave. His mobile phone, which went missing after the murder, was found in the possession of a soldier at the Hasdal Barracks. It was revealed that the phone had been given to him by another soldier named Yener Yermez. Yener Yermez, who was understood to be a fugitive, was caught on a bus while traveling to Kayseri 10 days later.

In his statement, Yermez explained that he had asked a well-dressed man for money at the time of the incident, and when he was refused, he became angry and attacked him with a knife. He said that Garih gave him money after the first blow, but he continued to stab him when he saw blood. Yermez was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court.

WHO IS İZZET GARİH?

İzzet Garih was born in Istanbul in 1961. He graduated from the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA, in 1983. He completed his master's degree in Construction Engineering and Management at the same university in 1984. Between 1987 and 2002, he worked as an engineer and manager on various projects at the Alarko Land Development and Construction Group. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Alarko Real Estate Investment Trust from 2002 to 2007, and as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Alarko Holding A.Ş. from 2004 to 2015. He has been serving as the Chairman of the Board of Alarko Holding A.Ş. since 2015.
