'Civil War' lead actress Kirsten Dunst spoke about gender-based pay inequality in the film industry.

Explaining that she received lower pay than her male co-stars despite achieving more box office success with films like Jumanji (1995) and Bring It On (2000), Dunst said, "I was very young and I didn't know what to do at the time."

'IT DIDN'T OCCUR TO ME TO ASK'

Dunst added, "I was 17, I was still learning my taste in film. It didn't even occur to me to ask."

Dunst had previously described the pay gap between her and actor Tobey Maguire, with whom she starred in Spider-Man in 2002, as "very extreme."

'NO ONE QUESTIONED IT'

Alex Garland, who directed Dunst in her latest film Civil War, acknowledged that this was a significant problem but said, "No one questioned it, the male executives didn't question it, these were all inherited views. It wasn't thought about."
