İlber Ortaylı comments on the 'Ignorant' remarks that have become synonymous with him

Ortaylı was a guest on a program broadcast on tv100. Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı made statements about how holidays were spent in the Ottoman Empire and what the holiday rituals were. 

Talking about his childhood and his holiday memories from that time on the program, Ortaylı also commented on the "Ignorant" remarks that are most known and shared among the public, and which have become synonymous with him, saying, "The worst kind of ignorant is the semi-ignorant." 

Ortaylı stated, "The phrase 'I cut off conversation with the ignorant' comes from folk poetry. One needs to say 'I cut off conversation with the semi-ignorant.'

They have certain slogans. Because the semi-ignorant is unbearable. If an ignorant person is completely ignorant, that is a good thing.

Nazım Hikmet has a definition. He says, 'He is the one who learns from the soil and knows without books.' His description is very pleasant.

The ignorant person knows nature, knows the environment. The semi-ignorant, however, is the small-town type we have. They do not understand nature like a villager or a shepherd. Please do not just sit there calling everyone ignorant," he said.
