İlker Aksum, who lost his temper in traffic, recounts what happened
Footage of actor İlker Aksum arguing with a driver in traffic in the Urla district of İzmir had gone viral on social media. Aksum has now made a statement about the incident.
Aksum married breathing coach and theatre artist Dilay Ekmekçioğlu on 19 June 2023. The 53-year-old Aksum, who experienced the joy of becoming a father for the first time in February, made headlines after a heated argument with a driver.
Unable to keep his temper during an argument with a driver in traffic in the Urla district of İzmir, the actor got out of his vehicle and directed harsh words at the other party. The moments, recorded on a mobile phone, spread rapidly on social media and Aksum became a trending topic.
Breaking his silence after the incident, İlker Aksum recounted what happened in a video he shared on his Instagram account:
"Good morning, friends. Yesterday I experienced an unfortunate incident and I want to tell you about it right away. I wanted to respectfully give way to someone in traffic. I gave way for two seconds. A person came out from behind, leaned out the window and said, 'Move it, you idiot.'
I put my hand out and said, 'One moment.' He said, 'You idiot, you moron. It's your road, get moving.' So I got out and said, 'Hey, friend, why are you calling me an idiot?' He said, 'I'll give you a beating.' At that moment my wife came up to me and said, 'Just apologise to the driver.' I misunderstood. I said, 'Why are we apologising? I thought he was talking to me.'
I said, 'Why are we apologising, Dilay?' That was also misunderstood — as if I was snapping at Dilay, which had nothing to do with it. Right as we were talking like that, he said again, 'Watch it, I'll beat you, I'll beat you both.' On top of the insults. My nerves gave out and I swore. I apologise, friends. I also apologise to that person."
Following İlker Aksum, his wife Dilay Aksum also shared a post about the incident:
"Nobody knows about the car that hit us on a side street a month ago because of its speed while my baby was in the car, taking out the front left door. But what is more upsetting for me is this: I saw the woman who filmed this video. They stopped in the middle of the intersection to film it. It was not us who held up traffic — it was them. There was a moment when she looked me straight in the eyes. I saw her car. I saw her licence plate. I wish she had also shared that moment in the video. I thanked her — for spending a moment of her precious life on us. We talked through what happened before and after, and weighed our own share of responsibility. That moment was an unfortunate lesson in our lives, and by the time we got home we were deeply upset and had already learned our lesson. But the woman herself also turned out to be a very good lesson for me."
