Increase in domestic violence cases recorded in Germany
The number of domestic violence victims in Germany rose by 6.5 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, exceeding 256,000. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who announced that permanent counters for women affected by violence will be established at federal police stations, stated that specially trained officers will be able to record complaints and provide assistance there.
According to the 2023 domestic violence report released to the public by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Family Minister Lisa Paus, along with Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) Vice President Martina Link, 256,276 people became victims of domestic violence in Germany in 2023.
It was noted that 70 percent of those subjected to this type of violence were women.
In 2022, an 8 percent increase in domestic violence cases had been observed compared to 2021.
'THE GUILT ALWAYS LIES WITH THE PERPETRATOR'
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated in her remarks, "As a society, we must clearly state that we investigate violence against women and domestic violence, intervene, and do not accept it under any circumstances. We want to empower those affected and encourage them to report the perpetrators. Then more perpetrators can be held criminally accountable. No one should be ashamed of being a victim of violence. The guilt is never with the victim, it is always with the perpetrator."
Faeser, who announced that permanent counters for women affected by violence will be established at federal police stations, stated that specially trained officers will be able to record complaints and provide assistance there.
'REACHED FRIGHTENING DIMENSIONS'
Faeser added, "We are also discussing another step. If perpetrators are tracked with electronic bracelets, the police can intervene faster in an emergency and better prevent the recurrence of violence against women."
Federal Minister for Women Lisa Paus commented, "The significantly increasing figures regarding domestic violence once again show the frightening dimensions of a sad reality. Violence is an everyday phenomenon; this is unacceptable. This affects me deeply. The goal of the federal government is to effectively protect all people, especially women, from violence."
