According to the official Kyodo news agency, the 63-year-old author of "Captain Tsubasa", Takahashi, announced that he would be retiring but would continue his "creative activities."

Stating that "I still love drawing illustrations and thinking up stories," Takahashi said he would continue to plan stories based on the "Captain Tsubasa" character.

The state broadcaster NHK reported that the globally popular comic book series has sold over 90 million copies in more than 50 countries over the course of 43 years.

The latest installment of the series, "Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun," which met with readers last week, recounted the Japanese character's journey in the under-23 national football team.

In his announcement in January 2024, Takahashi had stated that he would end the series due to his own physical decline and the digitalization of the comic book market.

The first "Captain Tsubasa" comic book series was published in 1981 in the weekly magazine "Shukan Shonen Jump."

WHO IS CAPTAIN TSUBASA?

Created by Yoichi Takahashi in 1981, it was designed as a manga series and was also adapted into an anime of the same name. The story follows the experiences of Tsubasa Oozora, the star player of the Japanese youth team. It was also broadcast in Turkey under the title "Küçük Golcü" (Little Scorer).
