John Cena appears shirtless on the Oscar stage

John Cena appeared naked on the Oscar stage while presenting the Best Costume Design award to "Poor Things" as a tribute to the moment in 1974 at the 46th Academy Awards when a naked man ran across the stage while David Niven was introducing Elizabeth Taylor.

The host of the 96th Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel, recalled the 1974 incident and asked, "Can you imagine if a naked man ran across the stage today? Wouldn't that be crazy?" 

Following the question, John Cena poked his head out from the corner of the stage and said to Kimmel, "I changed my mind. I don't feel right about this. It's an elegant event, you know, you should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless joke."  

Kimmel replied that the bit was "supposed to be funny," to which Cena jokingly responded, "The male body is not a joke!" 

Cena walked onto the stage with nothing but a large envelope covering his private parts. Since he could not move to open the envelope, he was draped in a curtain-like garment.
