Lokma distributed for Spinoza on Heybeliada

Beyond the daily lokma prepared for customers, a scene rarely seen before drew attention at the Heybeliada Lokmacısı, where people usually pay to have lokma made as an act of charity when they lose a loved one.

Lokma was prepared and distributed on Heybeliada for Baruch Spinoza, one of the early thinkers of the Enlightenment. Under the glass display, a photograph of Spinoza was placed with the inscription "Glad you lived, Spinoza!"

When asked who had the lokma made, Levent the master replied, "I have a professor customer, they had it made."

WHO IS BARUCH SPINOZA?

Baruch Spinoza (born Benedito de Espinosa, later Benedict de Spinoza; November 24, 1632 - February 21, 1677) was a Dutch philosopher of Jewish descent.

As one of the early thinkers of the Enlightenment, Spinoza put forward modern ideas about the universe and humanity, conducted pioneering biblical criticism, and eventually came to be recognized as one of the most prominent rationalists of 17th-century philosophy.

Influenced by the ideas of Descartes, Spinoza became a leading philosopher of the Dutch Golden Age.
