Melek Mosso responds to AKP member who criticized her attire: 'The gentleman's lapse in judgment'

Singer Melek Mosso performed a concert in Kastamonu on August 24, marking the anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's arrival in the city. AKP Group Deputy Chairman Ahmet Namlı had targeted Melek Mosso over her attire, using scandalous language during a municipal council meeting.

AKP member Namlı had used the following expressions regarding Melek Mosso: "It seems that lady came down to her room without getting dressed. Gentlemen, this is so shameful, it is shameful. They are trying to present girls to their families in the name of freedom. Who is that lady? Does she suit Kastamonu? That evening, there was such a crowd. And most of them were our headscarved girls in the front. When I saw that that evening, my stomach churned; I said, what have we become, I said, what are we."

Reacting to Namlı's words, Kastamonu Deputy Mayor Eda Büyükdemirci said, "Because of these regressive thoughts, women are judged in society today because of their clothing. They are legitimizing sexual assaults committed against them because of their attire and clothing choices."

"I WILL WEAR WHATEVER I WANT"

Melek Mosso also responded to the AKP member Namlı via her social media account.

Melek Mosso's post is as follows:

“I listened with astonishment to the words that spilled from the mouth of a representative of the people, regardless of which party they belong to, in an imprudent manner and with a divisive tone toward the public.

There were two truths in what he said, and I thank him for those.

First, Kastamonu has not been able to have such a secular, democratic, and fun-filled crowd for many years. Second, the front of our stage was filled with the magnificent people of Kastamonu, both headscarved and unveiled, young and old, singing my songs in unison. I thank everyone who was there very, very much.

The gentleman's lapse in judgment, in my opinion, is that he said this during a festival where we were celebrating the 100th anniversary of Atatürk's arrival in Kastamonu and the Hat and Clothing Revolution. I enjoyed the concert very much, and I am sure the people of Kastamonu had a lot of fun too. Invite me again, and I will come again. And as a modern Turkish woman, I will continue to wear whatever I want.”
