Missing in the Alps for 5 days: Elderly woman survives by befriending a fox

89-year-old Giuseppina Bardelli fell into a 6-meter pit near Monterecchio after suffering from dizziness while picking mushrooms in the Alps. 

According to the report compiled by T24, her son, Sergio Bardelli, who reported his mother missing, requested that helicopters and drones participate in the search efforts.  

The elderly woman, who remained in the pit for 5 days and drank water from a puddle at the bottom, stated that she also became friends with a fox that approached her. 

Her family said that Giuseppina's past experience in the Alpine Club helped her with her survival skills.

SHE SURPRISED US ALL

Rescue teams stated that the search efforts took time due to the very tall vegetation around the pit. 

Firefighter Silvio Rizzelli, who coordinated the search, said the following:

"She was stuck in a deep pit filled with tall plants. She couldn't see us, and we couldn't see her. We were almost about to end the search. We were very surprised when we found her. She was tired but completely conscious. It surprised us all that someone her age could endure this."
