Netflix's selection of Korean productions: Projects to be released in 2024
Netflix has introduced its new list of Korean series, films, and programs to audiences. The published list includes projects such as Squid Game, Sweet Home, and Hellbound.
Don Kang, Vice President of Korean Content at Netflix, stated regarding the 2024 content: "In our selection of Korean content to be released this year, audiences will encounter content that reflects the essence of Korean storytelling."
ICONIC WORLDS RETURN
This year, long-awaited fan favorites are returning. Along with the second season of Squid Game, the third season of Sweet Home is coming, which begins a new human story after the end of people turning into monsters.
The second season of Gyeongseong Creature moves Park Seo-jun and Han So-hee to present-day Seoul, while the second season of Hellbound traces the chaos that emerged after the first season.
Netflix's Korean reality shows, which resonated strongly with audiences last year, are returning even stronger this year. Physical: 100, the first competition program to top Netflix's Global Non-English Top 10 TV list with its first season, returns with Physical: 100 Season 2 - Underground, where a group of 100 contestants from diverse backgrounds test their limits on large-scale courses in a brand-new underground concept.
On the other hand, in the second season of Zombieverse, the struggle for survival becomes more difficult for the contestants as the zombies evolve further.
Following a successful third season that surprised viewers with unexpected rule changes and twists, Single's Inferno, as the first Korean competition program on Netflix to be renewed for a fourth season, brings together hot and flirtatious new participants looking for love.
THRILLER, ROMANCE, AND ACTION SERIES
In 2024, Netflix continues to bring both heartbreaking and heartwarming love stories to audiences.
Captivating the King, set in a historical atmosphere, seeks love in the game of Go; while Queen of Tears, which focuses on a couple living apart in today's world reuniting, brings together the long-awaited duo of Kim Soo-hyun (It’s Okay Not to Be Okay) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes).
While Doctor Slump adds a medical touch to the romantic comedy genre, the Hospital Playlist spin-off Resident Playbook (WT) presents a production featuring Go Youn-jung (Alchemy of Souls).
Mr. Plankton, where an unhappy woman accompanies her ex-boyfriend on the final journey of his life to search for his biological parents; Hierarchy, a youth revenge romance; and The Trunk, starring the legendary Gong Yoo (Guardian: The Lonely and Great God), where the dark secrets of a secret matchmaking service come to light, take viewers on an immersive journey with various story twists.
For thriller lovers, The Bequeathed weaves murders and dark secrets among family graveyards. In A Killer Paradox, Choi Woo-sik (Parasite) and Son Suk-ku (D.P.) play a complex game of cat and mouse, while The Frog takes viewers to a hotel deep in the forest to solve a case. This year, Korean dramas not only solve crimes but also bring along a political struggle that needs to be resolved with The Whirlwind.
While Chicken Nugget, inspired by popular manga, and the dark comedy The 8 Show prepare to make audiences laugh, Parasyte: The Grey, which brings Hitoshi Iwaaki's famous manga to life, adds a new touch to the story.
PROGRAMS THAT WILL STIMULATE THE IMAGINATION
This year, Netflix is incorporating more diversity into its film category, featuring world-renowned Korean actors who put their heart and soul into every film in leading roles.
Film genres include romance and drama with Song Joong-ki (Vincenzo) (My Name is Loh Kiwan), action with Kim Woo-bin (Black Knight) (Officer Black Belt), science fiction disaster with Park Hae-soo (Narco-Saints) (The Great Flood), dystopian science fiction with Don Lee (Badland Hunters), and historical with Gang Dong-won (Broker) (Uprising). Uprising also highlights Netflix's first collaboration with the famous Park Chan-wook.
Furthermore, Netflix is taking its programs to the next level by offering unprecedented concepts with creative themes. In Agents of Mystery, special agents solve strange cases, and in Super Rich in Korea, multi-billionaires showcase their luxurious lives. In The Influencer, South Korean influencers compete for attention, while Unknown Chefs (WT) brings together 100 chefs for a fiery cooking competition.
