Nobel Prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs has died
According to a statement from the University of Edinburgh, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs, who discovered the concept of the "Higgs boson," has passed away at the age of 94.
The University of Edinburgh announced that 94-year-old Nobel Prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs, who discovered the concept of the "Higgs boson"—also known as the "God particle," which helps explain how matter formed after the Big Bang—has "passed away peacefully at home following a short illness."
"A REMARKABLE INDIVIDUAL..."
University of Edinburgh Principal and Vice-Chancellor Peter Mathieson stated that Higgs was "a remarkable individual, a truly gifted scientist whose vision and imagination have enriched our knowledge of the world that surrounds us."
The theory proposed by Higgs 49 years ago, which independently explained how particles gain mass alongside Belgian physicist François Englert, was proven in 2012 by scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Higgs received the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
