Prison sentence sought for social media personality Murat Övüç

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has completed its investigation into the remarks made by Murat Övüç in a video shared on social media. The indictment states that Övüç's words were provocative in nature, pitting one segment of society against another.

The indictment prepared by the prosecutor's office emphasizes that Övüç's remarks encouraged hatred and discrimination. The video in question was shared by numerous social media accounts and groups, sparking widespread reaction.

ÖVÜÇ'S DEFENSE

In his statement, Murat Övüç indicated that he recorded the video on a plane and only intended to make a joke by covering his head with the shawl on his shoulder. Övüç stated that he used the words, "What should I do, girl? Look, here you go," for humorous purposes and that he does not accept the charges.

TRIAL PROCESS BEGINS

The trial of Övüç will begin in the coming days at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance. The prosecutor's office is requesting that Övüç be sentenced to between 1 year and 6 months and 4 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of 'publicly inciting hatred and hostility'.
