Restoration work at Selimiye Mosque nears completion
Restoration work continues at the Selimiye Mosque, which Mimar Sinan described as his 'masterpiece'.
The General Directorate of Foundations began the restoration of the mosque in November 2021, with work being carried out simultaneously on both the interior and exterior.
While work on three of the mosque's minarets has been completed, the work on the final minaret is nearing its end. Restoration teams have also finished the lead renewal and stone repair processes at the mosque.
While the restoration of the dome is complete, the renewal of the hand-drawn decorations (kalem işi) and the wooden doors and shutters is ongoing.
Teams are continuing their work on the outer walls surrounding the mosque.
'THE NORMAL COMPLETION DATE IS 2025, BUT...'
Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer stated, "Work at Selimiye is progressing rapidly. The work on the minarets is almost finished. There are hand-drawn decorations in the interior. The board is also continuing its work regarding these decorations. The contractor firm is likely aiming to finish the work by the end of this year. The normal completion date is 2025, but it looks like we will finish it this year."
