Risk of icing is increasing: Steps to take to prevent falls

Istanbul Rumeli University Assistant Professor Arzu Nurdaş stated that icing, especially during the morning hours, poses a major risk and expressed that falls can lead to serious injuries.

FALLS LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURIES AND ECONOMIC LOSS

Stating that surfaces that get wet during the night freeze and become slippery as temperatures drop below zero, Nurdaş said that this situation invites accidents. Falls that occur due to hasty and careless steps can have different consequences depending on their severity, the location where they occur, and the person's age. Such accidents can lead to serious injuries, ranging from simple soft tissue trauma to life-threatening head trauma.

It is observed that fractures due to falls are more common, especially in elderly individuals due to osteoporosis, and these fractures most frequently occur in the hip, knee, spine, hand, arm, and pelvic regions. Stating that such injuries affect not only physical health but also economic status, Nurdaş says that falls lead to loss of work, loss of independence, and an increase in healthcare expenditures.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN ARE OF VITAL IMPORTANCE

Emphasizing that the elderly and children, in particular, should not go out in cold weather unless necessary, Nurdaş stated that precautions should be taken by covering slippery surfaces with materials such as salt or sand, or by using non-slip mats. Stating that people should allow more time when going to work and school by considering the possibility of icing, Nurdaş expresses that hasty and careless behavior increases the risk of falling.

For those who have to go out, choosing shoes with non-slip soles and using well-lit paths are also ways to increase safety. It is of vital importance that individuals who have balance problems, use medications that may cause dizziness, or have brain and musculoskeletal coordination disorders do not leave the house alone in very cold weather and that these individuals receive help from a relative.

Especially on days when icing is intense, it is the safest option for individuals in the risk group not to go out unless necessary. It should be known that major accidents can be prevented with small precautions.
