Scorpion warning in Istanbul

It is reported that there has been an increase in the frequency of scorpion sightings in Istanbul due to the effects of summer heat and humidity. While the fact that some scorpions have reached homes in high-rise buildings has caused concern among citizens, experts emphasize that this situation does not in itself mean a serious danger.

Scorpion species naturally found in the Marmara Region prefer to live in particularly humid, dark, and sheltered areas. It is stated that in some neighborhoods with significant elevation differences, scorpions can enter buildings and are occasionally seen in apartments on upper floors.

Wildlife Expert Entomologist Prof. Dr. Zeynel Arslan Gündoğdu stated that there is more than one scorpion species in Istanbul and that citizens should not panic. According to Gündoğdu, the scorpions seen in the city are generally not large in size, and most stinging incidents can be treated similarly to insect bites.

Despite this, experts point out that one should not make direct contact with a scorpion. If a scorpion is seen inside the house, it is recommended to place a piece of paper or similar material over the animal, cover it in a controlled manner with a container, and remove it outside.

Gündoğdu states that scorpions have an important place in the ecosystem and contribute to the natural balance as they feed on various insects. For this reason, it is advised not to kill scorpions and to remove them without causing harm whenever possible.

To keep scorpions away from living spaces, it is recommended to close gaps around doors and windows and to regularly check dark and humid parts of homes. It is also noted that some herbal repellents, such as peppermint oil, may be helpful.
