Shakira supports immigrants in the US: 'I am always in a state of fear'

Following Donald Trump's order for a harsh crackdown on immigrants, Colombian singer Shakira has joined the celebrities supporting the ongoing protests on the streets of the US.

The 48-year-old Colombian artist drew attention to the difficulties created by the harsh policies to which immigrants in the US are subjected.

"PAINFUL"

Speaking to BBC News, the singer said that with Donald Trump prioritizing the cessation of immigration violations after being re-elected president, living in the US now means "a constant state of fear," and added: "It is truly very sad to see this!"

Stating, "Now, more than ever, we must remain united," Shakira said, "Now, more than ever, we must raise our voices and make it very clear that while a country can change its immigration policies, the treatment of all people must always be humane."

Shakira stated, "Like many Colombian immigrants who came to this country in the hope of a better future, I was only 19 when I moved to the US." The Latin singer, whose native language is Spanish, shared that she turned to the poetry and writings of Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman, and Bob Dylan to learn English and "understand how English works in song lyrics."

The mother of two accepted the Grammy award she won earlier this year with the words, "I dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country." She also added, "You are loved, you deserve it, and I will always be by your side and fight for you."
