Singer Hande Yener recounts her cancer journey: I noticed the lump
Famous pop star Hande Yener was a guest at an event held as part of "World Cancer Day." Yener, who managed to beat breast cancer thanks to early diagnosis, had emotional moments as she revealed that she performed on stage with surgical drains in her body following her operation.
February 4th is commemorated as "World Cancer Day" to raise awareness about cancer. Medicana Zincirlikuyu Hospital held a talk on the occasion of World Cancer Day to increase awareness in the fight against cancer and to support patients undergoing treatment. Famous pop artist Hande Yener also participated as a speaker at the event, where Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Pelin Uysal and Breast Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Ömer Bender provided important information. Yener, who was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago and successfully completed her treatment process, had emotional moments at times while describing the process she went through and the importance of early diagnosis in cancer treatment.
"I noticed the lump while checking my breast for aesthetic concerns"
Describing her cancer diagnosis process, Hande Yener said, "Everything actually started with hitting rock bottom. There were so many things that upset me and brought my mood down. People, events, relationships in my life, friends, acquaintances, lovers. It doesn't matter. I was obsessing over so many things that my outlook on life had changed. I had devalued myself. Even worse, I realized that I was allowing others to devalue me. I found the lump with my own hand. I did something I wouldn't normally do. I had lost some weight. While checking to see if there was any sagging after losing weight, I felt something. Actually, while looking with good intentions and from an aesthetic perspective, I felt a lump. I was never someone who thought 'it's something bad,' but at that moment, a strange feeling arose inside me. I said, 'There is something wrong with me.'"
Hande Yener's advice: 'Don't avoid check-ups'
Stating that she went to the doctor without wasting any time, the famous singer said, "I decided to put on my shoes and go to the doctor immediately. Because going for a check-up is an indicator of the value a person places on themselves. I care incredibly about going for check-ups. Because this is actually a value we give to ourselves. I think people who are afraid to go for check-ups do not value their lives enough. When technology has advanced this much, and in a period where early diagnosis is so important, avoiding it doesn't seem right to me."
Describing the surgery process, Yener said, "When my doctor said, 'We need to put a silicone implant here,' I said, 'It doesn't matter to me.' But he said it would be the right thing to do. I said, 'Do as you see fit.' Because I have so much to do, I have so many words to say, I have my son, I have my dogs, I have my fans," she said, unable to hold back her tears.
She revealed she sang at an awards ceremony after the surgery
Stating that she received an offer to attend an awards ceremony in the period after the surgery, Hande Yener said, "I was told it might be good for me. I accepted without thinking. I got ready and went to the awards ceremony. No one knew what I was going through at that time. I didn't share it with the media either. Because a person accepts it themselves first, then they can talk about it. I was told that an award would be given for the music video of the song 'Mor'. There was already a pandemic at that time, and it was stated that a large event would not be held, that it would just be a quick shoot and the award would be received. Thinking it might be good for me, I accepted without hesitation. I went upstairs and entered my dressing room. I was looking for a jacket with shoulder pads. We hid the drains inserted after the surgery inside the shoulder pads. I went to the Golden Butterfly Awards Ceremony like that. No one knew what I was going through at that time. I hadn't shared it with the media either. Because a person cannot accept some things themselves first. You cannot reveal every secret immediately," she said.
